Buffalo Bill and *Muson
Originally published June 2019 My sister Sharon once participated in a "team building" exercise in which you were to describe yourself in one word. It's a very interesting exercise. Especially when I applied this question to myself. The word that came immediately to me is "curious". Which is the only explanation for the fact that this morning, when I had plenty of other much more legitimate tasks to attend to, I found myself deep down the "internet research rabbit hole". The

Tales From Tulsa- Found at Hartmeyer
You can find Arabian horses from all over North America here in Tulsa at the 55th Arabian Nationals. But did you know you can shop for items from all over as well? And probably none have traveled farther than this little piece of equestrian sculpture. My post earlier in the week featured massive terracotta sculptures atop the Boston Avenue Methodist Church equestrian sculptures as architectural elements, but the focal point of this design is handcrafted from another very nat

Tales From Tulsa-Circuit Riders
Because I love horses, art, artists and history, discovering Robert Garrison’s Circuit Riders atop the Boston Avenue Methodist church in Tulsa was exhilarating! When I say “discover” it just means that while I’ve always craned my neck to check out this super cool piece of Art Deco architecture, I’m always on my way to the Tulsa Expo Center and have never had the opportunity to stop and really check out the building. Yesterday was the first morning that Patty Lirakos and I shi

The Equine Theme-2002 Canadian Stamp
This design is one of my favorite equine themed motifs. I would LOVE to have it as a giant print but that’s not likely to happen as this super cool, feisty pony is about 1 x 1.5 inches…it’s a stamp—the Canadian 2002 “Year of the Horse” edition. In China, the horse is a symbol of vitality, progress, and success. In Asian art, horses symbolize force and strength, and are portrayed as lively, energetic and powerful. Horses are usually in motion, whether travelling in a herd or p

Happy Independence Day!
It really wasn't very hard to find a tie to the celebration of American independence, Virginia and horses! As it turns out, the horse George Washington (who was born in Virginia) is most commonly portrayed riding is said to be a grey Half Arabian named Blueskin. That much information is easy to find from any internet search. You can find lots of pictures of George Washington on a handsome grey horse, but none of these portraits were contemporary to the time. This means no art

America's Response Monument; The Horse Soldier
Today seemed like a great day to share a blog post from last year when Mike and I had the opportunity to visit New York City crossing off two “Bucket List Destinations” – both centered around equestrian history and art. High on our “Bucket List Destinations” was Liberty Park — home to a very special equestrian monument—the America’s Response Monument overlooking the National 9-11 Memorial. I become aware of this incredible statue last year while researching historical equestr

A Pilgrimage to The Horse Fair
Almost everyone that has an interest in horses has probably seen an image of Rosa Bonheur’s painting of The Horse Fair, and for good reason. This painting was first exhibited in 1853, was an immediate success and cemented her reputation as one one of the most famous artists of her time. At 8 feet in height and over sixteen feet long, the original version is owned by the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City, but Bonheur created several other smaller versions of the same

Light Up With Laurel Burch!
My most recent posts on Social Media involved one of my secrets for surviving January in central New York! A hefty dose of artificial sunshine! I challenge myself to create some myself but sometimes I need a "kick start" and Laurel Burch designs never fail to do just that! I confessed to my latest episode of self-gifting when I got myself this super cool wallet featuring my all time favorite LB motifs, Wild Horses of Fire! And now, I just found out you can "Light up with Laur

A few Horses by Jean Dupas
Some artists define themselves as being an "equine artist". Others will simply have, at one point or another, created a piece that features horses. Such is the case of Jean Dupas! Dupas was a French artist who lived from 1882 to 1964. The only reason I became aware of Dupas at all, is because I LOVE to watch Antiques Road Show. I can't remember whether I saw this poster on the UK version or the US. What I do remember is that when this poster was displayed on the screen, I lov

More About the Carousel
Some of the horses were bright and shiny with obvious new paint and the others, we were told, are in various stages of rennovation. They were so very shiny, we wondered if they were fiberglass, but the attendant told us that they were aluminum! They seemed a little smaller than I remembered, and a bit of research explained that these particular carousels, made by the Herschell Spillman Company of North Tonawanda NY, were made to be portable! This one was installed at Stewart

One more picture by Alfred DeDreux!
It's way too nice today to spend too much time a the computer, but I left out one picture from yesterday's post, that I wanted to share here. I'm not sure that the horse and the tack match! Maybe this winter I'll find time to dig into it and find out. I think this is Moroccan tack, but would that be right on a palomino? And, do I really care? Not really. Just makes me wonder. Hmmm. What kind of horses would have been in the area in the 1800's?? #AlfredDeDreux #ArabianHorseArt

Trainers Day Off! Horses found at Found!
As our "adventure" for the day , we decided to head to Found in Ithaca. Always a fun destination for hunting for antique or vintage treasures, today was the day for the "Found Flea Market" which added lots of vendors outside! And it turned out to be a gorgeous day! I thought we'd get their "early"...let's say 10:00, but the streets were jammed with cars parked along the sides already. Nonetheless, we headed in...the hunt was on, and it was our usual "challenge"...who could sp
